Cop mistakes chocolate bar for cellphone

A chocolate bar very nearly led to a blemish on a Timaru teenager's driving record.

Fortunately, Timaru Herald photographer Mytchall Bransgrove, 18, has been spared a fight to clear his name after police decided to cancel an $80 infringement fee issued when he was stopped for allegedly using his cellphone while driving.

The mixup happened in late December, when Bransgrove – waiting at the turning bay on King St to head up Beaconsfield Rd – was about to take a bite from a Moro Gold chocolate bar.

As he turned, he saw the lights of a police car behind him – his first encounter with the law since gaining his restricted licence in August.

"He started talking to me," Bransgrove said.

"At first I couldn't understand him. I heard the word cellphone – my first thought was, 'Is my cellphone on the roof?'"

"[The officer] said, 'I saw you using your cellphone while you were driving'."

Bransgrove said he was confused for a few seconds until he realised the officer had mistaken his chocolate bar for a cellphone.

Despite trying to explain, including pointing out his cellphone was in a closed bag on the passenger side floor, the ticket was issued – and Bransgrove lost his appetite.

Had he been talking on his cellphone, Bransgrove said he would have paid the fine.

However, unwilling to let his copybook be blotted by a chocolate bar, he wrote to the police, offering his explanation.

Yesterday he received a letter back, saying the infringement had been cancelled "after careful consideration of your comments and the circumstances surrounding the issue of this notice".

He's not holding any grudges. The officer was just doing his job, he said.

"I believe it was a genuine mistake on the police officer's behalf," Bransgrove said.

"I'm quite glad that nothing's gone on my record."

Bosco introduces chocolate bar

MONTVILLE — It's been around since 1928 and universally known — from it being smooth and chocolatly to being "Seinfeld" character George Costanza's cherished ATM password.

Everyone knows Bosco.

And now the Morris County-based Bosco's president wants people to familiarize themselves with the Bosco Milk Chocolate Bar.

"It's new, it's just being launched," Steve Sanders, president of Bosco Products Inc., said Tuesday. "It is delicious. It is a fun type of product. . . . It's an iconic brand and really it's a fun treat."

While the Bosco Bar might be new, the famous Bosco chocolate syrup has long-established New Jersey roots.

"It's been here for a long time," Sanders said. "The product was created in 1928 by a Camden, New Jersey, physician as far as the chocolate syrup goes. We've manufactured the chocolate syrup right here in Towaco for distribution worldwide."

Sanders is also president of Bosco's sister company, Sea Breeze, which is now in its fourth generation of family leadership with Sanders' sons, Scott and Josh, now holding management roles in Sea Breeze.

"We like to be a hidden New Jersey secret here," said Scott Sanders, a project manager with Sea Breeze, during an interview at the company's headquarters and factory on Main Road.

Steve Sanders said he acquired the Bosco brand in the early 1980s right around the time he uprooted Sea Breeze from its original hometown of Paterson and moved it to Towaco in Montville Township in 1984.

"We were in Paterson from our inception, (with) different locations as our business grew," Sanders said. "It's still New Jersey. We're a New Jersey company originally. I happen to live in Montville and found a nice property in the Towaco section which we developed."

Barnet Sanders — Steve Sanders' grandfather — founded Sea Breeze in 1925 as a seltzer water distributor and soon began adding flavored syrups to the mix of products to be sold.

While Bosco is sold in plastic bottles, Sea Breeze distributes its varieties of sodas, iced teas and fruit drinks in boxes to be sold on tap by its customers, including many area restaurants, bars and catering businesses.

Yummy Chocolate Candy Wedding Favors

Mmmmmm..chocolate. One of the most popular wedding favors out there for brides is to use some kind of candy. It's relatively inexpensive, well liked by nearly everyone, and you can wrap it up to where it looks totally cute. Perhaps the favorite (of mine anyway) are the chocolate wedding favors. Despite what you think, you don't have to spend a fortune to make chocolate wedding favors, its a great inexpensive wedding favor. On top of that, you can even lots of different things with chocolate wedding favors to spice it up and make it unique for your wedding. Here are some great ideas to make your own chocolate wedding favors.

1. Chocolate Rose Wedding Favors

If you haven't seen this done before, it's pretty charming. Grab some Hershey's kisses, wire, cellophane, green florist tape, and some silk leaves if you like. To make these chocolate wedding favors, take two kisses, put them bottom to bottom and stick a length of wire through them both. Then wrap them tightly in cellophane and secure with the florist tape, adding leaves to the middle of the wires as desired. This takes a lot of time, but they turn out cute if you keep everything looking the same. It may take you a couple of roses before you get the knack for it. But they can be placed in small baskets in the middle of each table as a cute addition to your table's centerpiece.

2. Chocolate Lollipop Wedding Favors

This chocolate wedding favor can be done quickly and easily, and they do turn out really cute. Simply go to a craft store and pick out a candy mold that you would like to use, and a bag of lollipop sticks as well (you can get a pack of a hundred or more for just a few dollars). Then, melt almond bark and add food coloring if you'd like a certain color, pour into mold, add the lollipop stick, and freeze for a few minutes until firm. Then, wrap each in cellophane and store in the refrigerator until time to serve. Or, if you prefer, you can find your own recipe for chocolate and use that instead, but almond bark is the easiest for me.

3. Chocolate Bar Wedding Favors

This is a really simple wedding favor. Go to the store and either get a bunch of mini chocolate bars such as a bag of assorted chocolate bars, or large full size chocolate bars. Then you can get on the internet and order wrappers in your wedding colors or with a special pre-printed note to your guests, remove the original wrapping and replace it with your special wrapper. Voila! Easy, right

4. Chocolate Candy Wedding Favors

This one is getting really popular. Instead of pre-packaging hundreds of little individual wedding favors, buy lots of types of chocolates, display them attractively in large bowls, and provide each guest with a small bag they can fill with their favorites and take home. All you'll need for this is large bowls for the candy, a scoop for each candy, small bags or boxes for the guests to use, and any other table decorations you like. Very simple, and you ensure that your guests get their favorite to take home.

Like I said, chocolate's great, and nearly everyone loves it. It's a great no hassle wedding favor that you can quickly make and store until your big day.
